Gardening tips & advice for the month of June

Hi, I’m Su and i'm based at Tenterden Garden Centre. I have been tasked with providing month-by-month advice to help you achieve the most from your gardens… June is a fantastic month to enjoy in the garden with longer balmy evenings (we hope) and cool quiet mornings. As well as enjoying the peace and beauty of your garden, here's a few things you could be doing this month...

  • Now is the time to plant your summer bedding and tender vegetables such as runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes and peppers outside
  • Hoe borders and veg beds regularly to keep weeds at bay
  • Try to mow your lawn at least once a week on a moderate setting, remember if you cut too low when the weather is hot you can cause damage to the grass
  • Stake or support tall perennials to prevent them flopping. Prune back spring shrubs such as Forsythia now if they need it, this allows time for growth and flower bud formation for next year
  • Dead head summer bedding regularly to encourage flowering for a dazzling display all summer
  • Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorching. Open doors and vents to increase ventilation on warm days
  • Sow carrot varieties now such as Chantenay for autumn and winter harvesting
  • Place straw around strawberries to prevent rain splash and encourage ripening – hopefully just in time for Wimbledon!
  • Feed tomatoes regularly with a high potassium tomato food – ask in-store if you are unsure, we would be happy to help and advise you
  • As flowers fade, dead head roses to tidy the plant and encourage further flowering. Watch out for aphids and diseases, spraying your roses with Roseclear or Multirose can make a huge difference

Wishing you a very happy June full of sunshine and flowers!
