Our extensive range of Spring Flowering Bulbs including daffodils, tulips, crocus and hyacinths start to arrive during early August.
We have a Brand New large display of Wild Bird Care products including feeders and all kinds of birdfeed from Fat Balls to Specialist Seeds. Out in the Plant Areas we have an interesting selection of Ornamental Grasses, a lovely array of Penstemons aa well as Dahlias which are coming into flower.
In addition we also have a good variety of Conifers all suitable for planting now and throughout the autumn. We still have a colourful range of Summer Bedding plants if you need to fill any gaps in your flower beds and our collection of Winter Flowering Pansies will be available later in the month.
This warm dry weather tends to encourage problems such as mildew, preventative fungicide sprays are available in the Garden Shop area but do make sure your plants are well watered and fed as this will keep them strong and more able to withstand any problems. Weatherwise Forcasters are predicting a drier, warmer and sunnier month than average, particularly in the south, referring to it as a Barbecue August, so stock up on charcoal ! We also sell a varied range of gas barbecues and accessories.
With the hot sunny weather continuing you may want to look at our selection of Parasols and Gazebos, they are ideal for giving you that comfortable bit of shade on hot days. Our Garden Furniture collection has sold very well but stocks are now getting low in our stores with only limited items available from our suppliers. We are already planning next year’s range and looking at ways to combat rising shipping costs and the VAT increase.
August Garden Hints
► When cutting your lawns in hot dry weather raise the mower blades allowing the grass to stay slightly longer and thus keeping lawns greener.
► Keep ponds topped up and remove any fading flowers and yellowing leaves from pond plants. The less leaves that are left to rot in the water will help to discourage the growth of algae.
► Leave out clean water for birds and wildlife.
► Water plants regularly.
► Give dry lawns a good soaking.
► Prune wisteria and trim hedges.
► Prune rambling roses after they finish flowering.
► Trim lavender after the flowers have faded.
► Take cuttings from tender perennials.
► Support heavily laden branches on fruit trees.
► Remove any yellowing leaves on tomato plants.
